Cross-Cultural Journeys

Journey Services Counseling specializes in helping you navigate the exciting but challenging adjustments and transitions in cross-cultural journeys.

  • Are you preparing to move to a different culture as an individual?  The challenges involved in this journey can be made much easier with adequate preparation.
  • Are you preparing to move to a different culture as a family?  This journey has many challenges in addition to adjusting to a new culture.  Each family member will have their own unique needs, each will adjust at a different rate.  You will face many questions, including: lifestyle choices, gender roles, education of children, cultural expectations.
  • Are you returning “home” after living in a different culture?  What do you do when home doesn’t feel like home anymore?  What do you do when you don’t fit into cultural or family expectations anymore?  Counseling can help you navigate this journey of “reverse culture shock.”
  • Are you in a cross-cultural marriage, where each partner is from a different cultural background?  This might include marriage across faiths.  You are faced with conflicts and decisions about expectations in marriage, gender roles, expectations of in-laws and extended family, questions of raising children to value each cultural or religious heritage.
  • Are you raising kids in a culture that is not your home culture?  This journey offers many unique challenges as you seek to guide your children to be world citizens. Are you a TCK?  A “third-culture kid” is someone who has spent significant time in developmental years in a culture other than their parents’ home culture.  You will likely not feel 100% at home in either your parents’ home culture or your host culture.  Counseling can help you navigate this journey as you discover the bigger, broader world of a TCK.
